Deck of Cards Art Project

So, a fellow artist friend of mine, Christine Dehlinger recommended me to this fun project, the Deck of Cards Project, organized by Robin Good. The project brings together many artists and non-artists to all design a deck of cards together. I was lucky to be assigned a court card, which was the Queen of Diamonds (image and description at the link!), and I had a lot of fun designing it, borrowing from tarot symbolism in my choice of imagery. Each artist will receive a deck or three, and it is rumored that an exhibition of the original pieces will be happening sometime later in the year, so stay tuned!

7/10/2014 What’s Up…Whoops

So, Wednesday came and went this week, but I do have one new tidbit to announce:  Art Donation continues!  This time, I am donating the piece pictured below to Bandung Restaurant in Madison for a silent auction to benefit the family of Chou Yang, who sadly passed away last month.  Please consider attending this event to support his family and the restaurant in their time of grief.  More information is available here.Dhammapada_nagavagga

7/2/2014: What’s Up Wednesday

#WUW

auctions_2014

Finally some new stuff is coming down the pipeline, so I thought a What’s Up Wednesday post was well overdue!  I’ve long held in the back of my mind how I should apply at least a portion of my artistic talents to charitable efforts.  It only seems fair to repay in some small way for the joy that creative work brings –beyond, that is, whatever enjoyment people may take from the works per se.  I’m a believer in Ars Gratia Artis, but I also believe in contribution to the common good.  Not to over-inflate the significance of my contributions, it still makes me very happy to have been recently offered the opportunity to donate some work to two great causes in supporting victims of abuse in Dane County, WI.

Canopy Center Lift the Mask Fundraiser: I will be painting four masks (one of which is pictured above, unpainted) for the Canopy Center’s   annual Lift The Mask fundraiser event on Friday, October 10th.

Dane County Rape Crisis Center Java Jive Fundraiser:                                                                        I am donating my piece “For a Good Time…” (pictured above) to the Dane County Rape Crisis Center  for the silent auction at their annual Java Jive  fundraiser event on Sunday, October 5th.

If you are able, please consider marking your calendars and attending these events or donating to these two important organizations.

What’s Up Wednesday

So apparently #WuWednesday is Wu-Tang Wednesday, but #WUW shall be What’s Up Wednesday!

This Wednesday I have been mounting monotypes in preparation for my upcoming show opening June 5th 5-9 pm at Yahara Bay Distillery in Madison, Wisconsin.  I absolutely adore the smell of nori rice paste (it is a sweet, fresh smell), making the task of float mounting paper on mat board very pleasant.  Here’s a shot of the materials and one of the prints that will hang in the show entitled “Dhammapada XXIII”.  The elephant is a very prominent symbol in Buddhism, representing the spiritual strength, restraint, and sometimes solitude of the enlightened sage.  Coincidentally, sometimes elephants are referred to as nāgas, the same word for the serpent/dragon spirits that figure prominently in Buddhist mythology.  I have also made a print imagining one of these dragons or nāgas.
